Finasteride

Finasteride is an antiandrogen which acts by inhibiting type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used as a treatment in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in low doses, and prostate cancer in higher doses. It is also indicated for use in combination with doxazosin therapy to reduce the risk for symptomatic progression of BPH. Additionally, it is registered in many countries for androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness).

Some welcome research for the Propecia hair loss drug shows that doctors and patients really do not need to worry about its sexual side effects. In the study done by the South West Oncology Group in the United States over 17,000 men of the age of 55 and older were tracked for seven years and the number of men reporting erectile dysfunction was very small. Propecia (a brand name for finasteride) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of male-pattern baldness. Male-pattern baldness is a hereditary condition caused by an excess of hormones called androgens. Over half the male population over their mid twenties experience hair loss in some form. History

The drug propecia came out in the 1980’s as a treatment for the enlarged prostate. It was not until the mid-1990’s that propecia was discovered to work as a remedy for hair loss. On December 22, 1997, the FDA approved finasteride to treat male pattern hair loss. Before propecia, there was no easy and convenient cure for hair loss. People suffering from hair loss would experiment with shampoos, mousses, and vitamins in an attempt to grow hair. However, nothing worked. Most people who were very self-conscious about their hair loss would resort to wigs and toupees, which were often unnatural in appearance. In the past few years, medicine has made tremendous strides in the treatment of men's hair loss. With the advent of 5-alpha-reductace inhibitors such as Propecia and the evolution of surgical hair restoration, living with noticeable hair loss is no longer inevitable. For the first time in the history it is now possible to stop or slow the progression of hair loss and to replace lost hair through surgery with completely natural results.

Propecia was developed to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head) in MEN ONLY. There is not sufficient evidence that propecia works for receding hairlines at the temples. Propecia is for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children. In clinical studies for propecia, a small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, or a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men and went away in men who stopped taking propecia because of them.

Male pattern baldness (also known as genetic hair loss or alopecia androgenetica) is the most common form of hair loss in men. Hair loss in men is genetic about 95% of the time. This means that about 95% of balding men suffer from “male pattern baldness,” or in medical terms, “androgenetic alopecia.” This is generally characterized by the U-shaped edging of hair from ear to ear that is common in most balding men.
